Visual Studio Code Osx

How to update to the latest release. The following shows you how to update to the latest release of Visual Studio Code. Note: For Mac and Windows users, we have enabled the auto-update channel. If you're prompted by VS Code, accept the newest update and it will get installed (you won't need to do anything else to get the latest bits). Visual Studio Code is free and available on your favorite platform - Linux, macOS, and Windows. Download Visual Studio Code to experience a redefined code editor, optimized for building and debugging modern web and cloud applications.

Some of my other articles about Visual Studio Code :

Introduction

Sugar rush game free. Visual Studio Code is powerful editor that Microsoft released at Build 2015. There have been several questions regarding how to setup TypeScript with Visual Studio Code on OSX. I decided that I'd stop for a second and make a quick post showing you exactly how to do it.

Install TypeScript first

From your terminal, enter the following :

You should see the following in your terminal window after running the command :

Notice that it installed typescript 1.5.0-beta. This is required for Visual Studio Code.

Switch Back to Visual Studio Code

Create a New Project and create a new file called tsconfig.json.

Note: By default the target is ES3. I changed mine to ES5, which Visual Studio Code supports, but it also supports ES6 (experimental).

Build the Project

If you press CMD-Shift-B, then it will ask you to configure the Task Runner. You will now have a file called tasks.json. Make sure it looks like the following:

Note: Don't worry about the windows section as the OSX installation of Visual Studio Code will ignore it. The only thing we changed here was the args field, which allows it to compile all files in the current directory and subdirectory and added isShellCommand to true. Notice that under the command parameter, it has tsc. If you didn't install TypeScript first, then it would have failed here.

Create a main.ts file and add some TypeScript code

You can use the following sample code if you wish :

Press CMD-Shift-B and you should see a main.js has been created.

If you have any problems getting this to work, then check out my Github repo for this sample project. Wav to video with image.

Here is a screenshot of what Visual Studio Code looks like once complete :

Wrap-up

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or comments, then leave them below.

MacOS Modern is a set of Visual Studio Code themes styled to match native MacOS as closely as possible. Updated to include dark + light versions and a few minimal icon themes. Reapply both (icon and color) themes if you have problems. I HIGHLY recommend using the settings below for best results. Screenshots need to be updated; there is a lot more options now. The dark theme has just got an overhaul!

MacOS Modern - Xcode Low Key + MacOS Modern Minimal Icons

MacOS Modern - Xcode Default + MacOS Modern - Color Icons

Setup & Tweaks

There are a few settings that should be added to your User Settings to really transform the look to better match OS X. The zoom level and native title bar make a huge difference in the overall look of VSCode. I also prefer to hide the Activity Bar, which can be done from the View menu.

Highly Recommended
Extension Tweaks

If you choose to hide the activity bar, you can install the 'Activitus Bar' extension to add the activity bar buttons to your status bar. Add these settings to theme the 'Activitus Bar' and 'Project Manager' extensions to match Modern MacOS. Game show slots.

Optional Additions

You can optionally hide the minimap.

Activity Bar Badge Background

You can change the activity bar badge background with these settings. Add the line for the color you want to workbench.colorCustomizations

Extras

Light and dark VSCode icons are also included in full quality (don't use the small preview below) on the GitHub repo or in the extension folder in:
~/.vscode/extensions/davidbwaters.macos-modern-theme/extras/app-icons
You could also download the files from the repo folder by clicking the name of the icns or png and clicking the 'Download' button. You can use the free app LiteIcon to change the icon.

There are also Sketch design files with all the icons. Feel free to use, tweak, add, etc. If you find them useful, a shoutout would be appreciated.

Some of my other articles about Visual Studio Code :

Introduction

Visual Studio Code has built in Git support, but very few know how to use it on OSX with GitHub. Even in the official docs, there is only a few paragraphs on it. In this post, I'll show you how I set it up.

Adding your project to GitHub

Switch to your project and hit the source control button as shown below.

Super hot free play. The first thing you will see is that your workspace isn't under git source control.

Press the 'Initialize Git Repository' button and include a commit message (1) and finally hit the check mark at the top (2).

Your Project is Under Git Source Control, now What?

Visual

If you navigate back to your project, then you will see a new folder called '.git' and a config file that contains the following :

Here is a screenshot of my project :

This is typically the part where you begin a Google Search because you can't figure out how to get the drop down to populate to push your source to a remote server.

Time to Fix it!

Open github.com and create a Repo. Copy the path to the .git for later use.

Using the terminal, navigate to the location where your Visual Studio Code project is and type the following two commands (replace my .git project with yours) :

If you examine your .git/config file you will see the following has been added:

Visual Studio Community For Mac

You can now switch back to Git in Visual Studio Code and perform git operations without using the command line. Here is an example of where I modified a file and committed it to a remote server.
